SPRITZ MASTER!

One popular habit that originated during the heights of the Natural/Curly Hair Movement is that of spritzing the hair with water frequently or on a daily basis to moisturize or refresh it.

However, contrary to popular belief, repeatedly spritzing your hair with water actually does more harm than good.

Here’s why:

CURL CONFUSION

Rachel and I have the same curl pattern!

Yip, we have the same tight, u-shape wavy curl pattern that spirals towards the ends. * (see pic below)

But, if we were to use each other routine and products, neither of us would be happy with the outcome.

WHY INNERSENSE?

At Astyled, above all else, we emphasize and prioritize the importance of healthy haircare practices. So when choosing a line of products to use in the salon, and to retail to you, it was integral that the products not only perform well but also nourish the hair.

OILY MISCONCEPTION

The act of moisturizing inherently means to add moisture. But, there is an ongoing belief that still exists to this day, that oiling your hair moisturizes it.

How?! Moisture or hydration at its core comes from water. If we think about it on a scientific level, oil and water do not mix. In fact, most of us learned in high school that if you were to take a glass right now and put equal parts of oil and water into it, they will not mix. So coating your hair with oils blocks said water from being able to enter the cuticle and moisturize the hair.

YOUTUBE UNIVERSITY!

Up until now, what has been your main resource for information on natural hair care? The answer for most, and at one point myself, would have been YouTube.

Prior to going natural, I wore my hair relaxed for 7 years so that it would have been easy to manage. When I eventually decided that I wanted to give a go at natural hair, I turned to YouTube and looked at all the videos I could have on how to care for natural hair and the types of products I should be using. At the time it was helpful, but it still always felt as though something was missing...
