Up until now, what has been your main
resource for information on natural hair care? The answer for most, and at one
point myself, would have been YouTube.
Prior to going natural, I wore my hair relaxed for 7 years so that it would have been easy to manage. When I eventually decided that I wanted to give a go at natural hair, I turned to YouTube and looked at all the videos I could have on how to care for natural hair and the types of products I should be using. At the time it was helpful, but it still always felt as though something was missing...
The YouTube formula for natural hair
care (especially as it relates mostly to type 4 hair) prominently promotes the
LOC method, LCO method, an infrequent use of shampoo, co-washing, weekly deep
conditioning, and oiling the scalp and hair on a frequent basis.
While it is possible to maintain
healthy hair following some of these methods, most of them make caring for your
hair a long and tedious process that involves almost daily upkeep of the style
in order to get through the week. As Curl Specialists our goal is to give you a
routine that has few steps but is very effective in having and maintaining
healthy hair. We have invested in education and work with curly clients daily.
We have seen first-hand drawbacks these methods have on the hair, as well as
the benefits of a simplified routine.
Would you use YouTube as your one and only source for medical information?! While that type of content does exist, it is usually preceded with a disclaimer that these types of videos are not a replacement for seeing a professional if you do in fact have a problem, but rather just to serve as a baseline of understanding. The same goes for hair care. Consulting with a professional that specializes in the work you’re interested in will always be our recommendation!
